Mt Akrafjall
On the other side of the extinct volcano is the town of Akranes. An hour north of Reykjavik, it was settled in the year 880 by Irish brothers. It was one of Iceland's first fishing villages.
At three million years old, Mt Akrafjall is one of the oldest volcanic mountains in Iceland. It was eroded during the last Ice Age to its present shape.
